Council’s £100,000 sign plan aims to boost local tourism and trade

TOURISM in the town and surrounding area could receive a boost if a council project to install road signs costing an estimated £100,000 becomes reality.

The propsal to erect 13 signs with information on nearby attractions and facilities at key entry points to the Borders was discussed at a meeting of the local authority’s executive committee.

The blueprint includes a roadside board directed at people among northbound traffic on the A7 at Mosspaul. The sign would measure four metres squared, making it one of seven larger signs erected in the Borders. Six smaller signs would be installed alongside minor roads.

Earlier this year, an audit of existing signage was undertaken by the council, who concluded in a report that many entry points to the region are “cluttered with damaged and non-relevant signage”.

The existing signs were erected in 2003, and the initial strapline of ‘Scotland’s leading short break destination’ was removed last year after becoming disused by national tourism promoter VisitScotland.

It is proposed that new signs would accompany visitor information panels to promote nearby towns. A sign at Mosspaul could inform Hawick-bound tourists of the town’s knitwear and textile heritage and local facilities.
