Community service ordered after police find heroin hidden in suspect’s body

A MAN concealed heroin in his body and then tried to defeat the ends of justice by refusing hospital tests which would have confirmed the offence.

Ewan Peddie pleaded guilty to possession of the Class A drug and then refused to comply with the terms of a warrant granted to allow an internal examination on December 14, 2011

The 36-year-old was ordered to carry out 175 hours’ unpaid work in the community over the period of a year.

Depute fiscal Tessa Bradley said police had a search warrant for his McLagan Drive home and Peddie answered the door.

She added: “He was asked if he had any controlled drugs in the house and he indicated he had a piece of cannabis.

“During a full search of the property two sets of scales, three mobile phones, tin foil and bags were recovered.

“A strip search was carried out at the locus and nothing was found.”

The fiscal said Peddie was taken to the police station and it was suspected he was concealing a controlled substance internally.

She explained that at 6pm on the same date a warrant was obtained at Selkirk Sheriff Court to allow an internal examination and at 8.20pm Peddie was taken to Borders General Hospital.

The procedures were explained to him and Peddie refused to comply which resulted in him being arrested.

Ms Bradley said that on the journey back to the police station he indicated to police officers that he had diamorphine concealed in his body and he would produce it voluntarily.

The court was told that Peddie was taken back to the cells and he eventually produced a package containing brown powder which was found to be 3.17 grammes of diamorphine worth between £100 and £150.

Sheriff Valerie Johnston said she was imposing an alternative sentence to custody.
