Community service order slapped on teenage thief
A teenager who broke into a local nursery and stole money, was sentenced to a 12-month Community Payback Order with a condition he completes 240 hours of unpaid work.
Eighteen-year-old Steven Gorman of Wilson Drive, admitted breaking into Mansfield Nursery, Mansfield Road, on August 3/4 and stealing a cash box containing £129.
Gorman also admitted assaulting a man on the High Street on October 29, by punching him on the head, causing him to fall and strike his head.
Depute fiscal Alison Mackenzie said the victim was “knocked out for a few seconds.”
The assault was seen by three police officers who gave chase after Gorman ran off.
“He ran into Teviot Crescent and police gave chase, and he was found hiding behind a bush in a car park,” she explained.
Gorman also admitted breaching a bail curfew and possession of a knife at Baker Street on February 24.
Defence agent Ross Dos said his client, who was remanded in custody on February 27, had found his time in prison “extremely difficult.
“Polmont is a notorious prison for fighting and threatening behaviour, which happens on a daily basis,” explained Mr Dow. “It is a not a nice place, and he has found his time there extremely difficult.”
“Sheriff Donald Corke warned Gorman, “Were it not for your age and the taste of detention you have just had, you would be going straight back there.
“The assault you committed was particularly cowardly, and if you carry a blade you can do serious harm,” he added.
