Call for donation of old mobile phones to help kids’ iPad appeal

Children from Wilton are hoping Teries will answer their appeal for old mobile phones

TERIES are being asked to answer the call and help children in the town with additional needs.

Wilton school has got involved in the Hearts and Minds swapkit challenge, which sees old mobile phones exchanged for an iPad.

They need 165 phones for the iPad and 185 for the iPad and education pack which has several apps to help children learn.

Rhian Duncan, principal teacher at the additional support needs centre at Wilton, who is behind the local scheme, said: “We are looking to get an iPad with the different apps for the kids who have communication problems.

“This would really help them as they have pictures and symbols and a touch screen, it’s small enough that it can be carried around and it’s easily accessible.”

Currently there are 22 children at the centre, 12 of whom have problems communicating.

And Rhian admitted the iPad would make a huge difference to their learning.

She added: “They would be a great help. The kids could operate the devices themselves and it will help greatly with social interaction.

“I’d really like to see if we could buy two iPads by Christmas, but we’ll just see how we get on and just collect as many as possible. There have already been some phones donated and we’re really grateful for that.”

Any old phones, which must also have the battery, can be handed in to the school reception at Wilton or to The Baby Shop.
