Burnfoot seeks artist to spruce up mural

BURNFOOT Community Council are on the look-out for a local artist to help them renovate a popular community mural.

The mural has taken pride of place at the Burnfoot shops since it was painted in 1999 but sadly the effects of the weather have seen it begin to deteriorate over the last few months.

However, Burnfoot Community Council are now taking steps to ensure the painting will be restored to its former glory.

Entitled 'Children's Pastimes' the mural was painted by pupils at Burnfoot primary school and High School pupils from Burnfoot with the assistance of community artist Irene Beston.

The idea of the mural came from the late George Jackson, George was elected as an SBC councillor in 1997.

While serving on the Education Committee he came up with a novel way of stopping youngsters from defacing the wall on the side of the Burnfoot co-op.

Sadly, before the mural was completed, George Jackson died, but Burnfoot Community Council decided to erect a plaque beside the mural in George's honour.

In the years since it has gradually suffered the effects of the weather and is now in need of repair, interestingly however, it remains un-vandalized.

Long serving Burnfoot community councillor Jamie Batten was part of the original project and he is now looking to ensure that George's memory lives on in the shape of the beautiful mural.

Speaking to the 'News', Jamie said: "The young people of Burnfoot clearly feel a sense of ownership with this mural, but we need to restore it to its original glory. We are now looking for a local artist to come forward and help us with the restoration.

"There may be some money available within the community council budget to help with this work and we are very keen for someone to come forward and work with the community council on this project."

The mural was removed by SB Local on Wednesday and the six panels will be temporarily stored in the back of the Co-op to allow it to dry-out.

Anyone who would like to assist the project should contact Colin Bain on 370376.
