Bridge work delayed to farmers’ relief

THE closure of Martin’s Bridge has been delayed after considerable pressure from the local farmers and hauliers.

The bridge, off the A7 to the south of the town, was set to close in August for strengthening work to allow parts of a new windfarm at Langhope Rig to be transported across it, but farmers were among many who complained at the timing of the development, set to take place during harvest season.

David Richardson of the council confirmed the delay to work on the bridge. He said: “Due to ongoing discussions between stakeholders and interested parties, Scottish Borders Council and SSE Renewables have confirmed that the intended strengthening and refurbishment works to Martin’s Bridge will no longer take place in August 2012, with a new start date being confirmed later this year. A new programme for the bridge closure will be discussed with the local community as part of the rescheduled public exhibition.”

The public exhibition at Roberton scheduled for next week has been postponed until late-August.
