Bike boss reveals vision for new town skatepark

A LOCAL businessman has outlined his plans for a safe, family-friendly indoor skatepark in the town to replace the decaying outdoor facility adjacent to the leisure centre.

Julian Cram, the owner of Borders Cycles, says a new covered arena would provide a more civilised environment for skateboard and bike enthusiasts than the existing timber-based setup at Waverley Walk.

“It’s a grand plan,” admits Mr Cram, who is now seeking to form a committee to drive forward a community project. “All towns seem to be getting a skate park now, but they’re all outdoor. For Hawick to have an indoor one would be great for the town and a major attraction for people to come here.”

Mr Cram, whose Howegate cycle shop opened in December 2010, detailed to the Hawick News his vision of a family-friendly complex comprising a cafe, bouldering wall, soft play area, mini-cinema and mini-velodrome all centred around a skatepark.

He added: “The only way it would work would be as a community project. I have no intention of relying on council funding for this.

“We would like support from local businesses, and I would be happy spearheading and driving the project forward.”

In order to form a committee able to carry out a feasibility study and advance plans, Mr Cram would be interested in receiving notes of interest from individuals willing to assist with the project. He is looking for people – notably an accountant, lawyer and architect – to either join a newly-formed committee or be on-hand to offer advice. Anyone interested should call Mr Cram on 375 976 or 07805 465 372.
