Large fire at stables under investigation

Around 70 firefighters battled a blaze at a stables outside Hawick on Wednesday night.

The brigade received a call at 8.39pm reporting a large fire in a stable block at Spital Tower Stables, on the same estate as Ruberslaw Wild Woods Camping. At its height there were appliances attending from Hawick, Selkirk, Jedburgh, Galashiels, Kelso and Edinburgh.

A spokesperson said: “When crews arrived they were faced with a rapidly developing large fire along with a number of freed horses. Crews immediately got to work to extinguish the fire whilst recognising that assistance was required.”

Firefighters initially ensured that all the occupants of the building and livestock were safe and continued to fight the fire externally in three sectors, working hard to prevent further fire spread to the attached farmhouse.

Firefighters worked in difficult conditions throughout the night to bring the blaze under control and the incident was scaled down around 1am. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
