It’s not all coming up roses in west end

Councillor Davie Paterson has hit out at the “disgraceful state” of the rose bushes in the west end, writes Jason Marshall.

The Hawick and Hermitage member has written to Scotish Borders Housing Association (SBHA), which is responsible for the plants’ upkeep, but claims he has had nothing but “broken promises” from the social landlord.

Mr Paterson said: “I find myself having to write to SBHA yet again about the disgraceful state of the rose bushes in the west end. I have had nothing but broken promises from SBHA that they will attend to it.”

“If you just look at the contrast between SBHA-maintained gardens and Scottish Borders Council gardens, it’s night and day.”

Sara Allen, SBHA’s head of asset planning and development, said: “Following contact from Councillor Paterson, surveys [of the rose beds] have identified the scope of work required, including the replanting of some areas, and we are working with contractors to undertake this work.”
