FORMER Provost Zandra Elliot has been named as a ‘local hero’ and invited to join the Queen at the opening ceremony of the Scottish Parliament.
The town’s previous long-standing civic head has been nominated for the special tribute by local MSP John Lamont in recognition of the contribution she has made to the local community, and will join almost 100 other local heroes at the official opening of the fourth session of Holyrood on July 1.
Completing a list of specially chosen people from throughout Scotland, Mrs Elliot says she is thrilled with the honour. “I was absolutely stunned to receive this invitation from John and was delighted to accept,” she stated.
“I have never considered myself as a local hero, like so many others I have been happy to work for my community.”
Outlining why he felt inspired to put Mrs Elliot forward, Mr Lamont told the Hawick News: “I am delighted that Zandra has agreed to attend the official opening of the new Scottish Parliamentary session. She has been a true champion of Hawick throughout her life, not least in her years as the town’s Honorary Provost.”
Mrs Elliot will be given the privilege of joining a 1,000 strong procession for the historic ‘Riding’ along the Royal Mile, part of the centuries-old tradition.
She added: “It’s a great ending to my Provostship and I thank John most sincerely for this honour.”
