COMMUNITY Councillor Andrew Farquhar says Hawick should refuse its second place in the Floral Gateway Awards due to Scottish Borders Council’s neglect of the town.
The council has declared Hawick runner-up after Galashiels in the town category of the annual competition, but at Hawick Community Council on Tuesday night the award was labelled an insult.
Highlighting the loss of flower beds and poor grass cutting, Mr Farquhar angrily stated: “We should let this award lie because we have been badly let down by Scottish Borders Council and it makes this award worthless. We were not in a fit state to be judged. The town has been ruined this year, and to have the audacity to present this award makes it a meaningless exercise.”
Melrose was crowned first in the champions’ section, with Newcastleton winning a highly commended.
