AN additional 15 parking spaces are to be created at Atkinson Road.
The measures to ease congestion and improve road safety on the busy thoroughfare were backed by residents at a public meeting in the youth centre on Tuesday night.
A large turnout attended the meeting and heard from local councillors Stuart Marshall and Jock Houston as well as Scottish Borders Council’s road user manager Ron Elliot.
The increased parking will be situated at the top end of the road on ground which has been gifted by Scottish Borders Housing Association.
Councillor Marshall said: “I’m absolutely delighted that at long last a solution has been found to easing congestion on Atkinson Road.
“The additional off street parking spaces will go a long way to allowing motorists to pass more safely and at the same time improve visibility. Everyone at the meeting was in agreement that this is by far the best solution.”
The scheme, which will cost around £21,000, comes ahead of initial plans to introduce a one way system on the road. But Councillor Marshall insisted that could still be implemented.
He added: “We also gave residents an assurance that we wouldn’t completely shelve the idea of a trial one way system and it could hopefully be revisited if necessary.”
It is understood Mr Elliot will be conducting radar speed checks at the location both before and after construction.
