Exhibition focuses on emigration

AN exhibition looking at the emigration of locals to Australia and South Africa in the 19th century is currently being shown at the Heritage Hub.

Following the archive trail of those who decided to make a fresh start, the exhibition looks at what the immigrants lives were like here, what prompted them to make the perilous journey, what it was like, and what happened to them once they got there.

Reports from local newspapers give some clues, ranging from exploration parties crossing the Australian interior; a missionary bishop coming to a sticky end, gold discovered in South Australia, and in South Africa, wars between British troops and native South African tribes, whose lands the British settlers were taking.

The free exhibition runs throughout the summer.
