Ex-con stole food the day after release

ON the day after being released from a 10-month prison sentence, Douglas Young went shoplifting after claiming he had no money to get to Hawick.

The 24-year-old, of North Bridge Street, pleaded guilty at Selkirk Sheriff Court to stealing a quantity of foodstuffs from Marks and Spencers in Galashiels on August 20.

Four days later he was found in possession of three wraps of heroin valued at £30 by police officers.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond deferred sentence for three weeks for a report from BCAT – the Borders Community Addiction Team.
