FOR the first time ever the annual Hizzy Memorial Run will be starting in the Borders, writes Gavin Gibbon.
Having previously departed from Dundee on the route down to the Borders, the popular event in memory of the late Steve Hislop (pictured), which is now in its ninth year and takes place next Sunday (September 4), will start and finish at Denholm Green.
Organiser Wendy Oliver said: “I think the bulk of people who follow the run are from the Borders because that’s where Steve was from.
“From my point of view, to hold it entirely in the Borders gives everyone a chance to join in and take part in the whole thing or just sections.”
The 165-mile run will take participants out over the Carter Bar, past Bellingham, before turning towards Carlisle and going into Cumbria, through the countryside as they head back to Langholm and into Hawick around 2.30pm.
This part of the route is still to be confirmed, with riders expected back on Denholm Green at approximately 3pm, where popular local band Shtumm will be performing.
There will also be food and refreshments and a raffle, organised by Steve’s mum Margaret.
Wendy added: “The run is getting more popular every year and we’re doing our best to keep things fresh. This year’s event has all the makings of being another huge success.”
