Demands for motorists to slow down through Terraces ‘rat run’

Have your say

CONCERNS have been raised that speeding motorists in The Terraces could cause a serious accident.

Councillor Davie Paterson raised the matter at the community council on Monday night and said the area was still being used as a “rat run”, especially in light of the roadworks on Commercial Road.

And he feared it was only a matter of time before there was a casualty.

He said: “I’ve received several complaints from constituents about the speed of taxis and other cars, in Ettrick Terrace in particular, driving at between 50 and 60 miles per hour.

“There are a lot of children up there and all it takes is for one kid to come out onto the road and there will be a terrible accident.”

Community beat officer Keith Murray admitted the problem had been exacerbated by the one way system, but said it was a matter for Scottish Borders Council.

He added: “Since the one-way system was introduced, if you’re coming from the West End to get to Weensland then the fastest way is to go round The Terraces.

“I don’t know if there’s something the council can do there, possibly some sort of signage.”
