A man has been arrested for bogus workmen offences following the theft of money from an elderly couple.

The victims, aged 93 and 84, reported a three-figure sum of cash had been stolen after allowing a man entry to their home in Langlands while he undertook gardening work during December.

As a result of local police inquiries, a 28-year-old man was detained yesterday (Tuesday) and charged. He is due to appear in court today (Wednesday).

Inspector Carol Wood told the Hawick News: “We are committed to identifying those responsible for preying on vulnerable members of our community and bringing them to justice.

“The public can assist us in our efforts to tackle bogus workmen offences by reporting any suspicious activity around the homes of family, friends or neighbours.

“In addition, home-owners are also asked to only use companies or individuals they know and trust to carry out work on their properties and never allow anyone access to their home if they are not entirely satisfied as to their identity.”
