A PROPOSAL to allow camper vans to stay overnight in the Common Haugh has taken a further step forward following a special meeting of the Hawick councillors.

The six local members – who also sit on Hawick Common Good Working Party which owns the car park – attended a special meeting of the latter at Newtown St Boswells to discuss the proposal of a two-year trial recently raised by the town’s Welcome Initiative.

Having already backed the idea at a meeting of Teviot and Liddesdale Area Committee earlier this month, the Common Good Fund’s seal of approval takes the idea closer to fruition. Councillor Jock Houston (pictured) told the Hawick News: “The six Hawick councillors agreed unanimously to support in principle the Welcome Hosts’ plan to allow camper vans one free night at the Common Haugh during the tourist season.”

The councillors approved a two-year trial for up to six camper vans per night, and agreed to seek a Road Traffic Order and planning permission.
