ADDITIONAL salt bins are being made available to deal with the wintry weather.
Scottish Borders Council is to spend £16,000, increasing the number of bins in the region to almost 1,000. Teviot and Liddesdale currently has 134 salt bins, up from 116 in 2011/12.
The council’s winter service plan shows the challenges SBC was presented with in 2012/13. Salt usage was up to 43,000 tonnes from 23,000 the previous year, while SBC staff were called out 271 times to pre-salt roads in 2012/13 – considerably higher than the annual winter average of 180.
The additional salt bins will be allocated on request from the public following an evaluation and risk assessment by SBC.
