Builders deny closure claims

HAWICK builders J&R Elliot have moved to allay fears this week that the company has closed.

However, owner Zandra Elliot revealed that all the labourers have been laid off in what she hoped would be a “temporary measure”.

Rumours were abound this week that the Commercial Road-based company had folded.

But Mrs Elliot told the Hawick News: “We’re not closed, it’s just a temporary lay-off. We were in line for a big job and then it was withdrawn. We had nothing other than that on our books although we’re pricing plenty.”

It is understood the move affects five workers.

Mrs Elliot added: “We’re certainly not alone in the building trade given the current economic climate and, at the moment it’s just the big guys who are surviving.

“But it’s not all doom and gloom. We’re doing our best and we’ve got our fingers crossed that things will pick up.”
