Hundreds of fieldsports enthusiasts are set to visit Hawick on Sunday for the Scottish Champion of Champions Lurcher, Terrier and Gundog Show.

The very best in sporting canines from both sides of the border will be vying for the top dog spot at Volunteer Park from noon.

The event is organised by the Borders Area Fieldsports Society (BAFS) and as well as 35 competitive show categories, the event also boasts some top-class lurcher and terrier racing.

BAFS founder Stuart ‘Den’ Bell has been organising this hugely popular event for the past 20 years and despite suffering a stroke, followed by the death of his father in the last month, it was always a case of the show must go on.

Speaking earlier this week, Stuart told the Hawick News: “We’re expecting a good turnout as this is the last lurcher and terrier show of the year in Scotland.

“There is always a real family atmosphere and although we are expecting good weather, the stand at Volunteer Park provides a good vantage point to watch the show if it does rain.”

One of the most popular categories is the young handlers’ class, which offers the under-16s a chance to put their charges through their paces and gain valuable show ring experience. This class is sponsored by mother and daughter duo Rita and Wendy Storrie, who have donated medals, gifts and treats for the youngsters.

Commenting on his recent health scare and the help he has had from friends and family, Stuart added: “Organising these events is stressful but I’ve taken a back seat and have been helped enormously by friends and family. This show would not have been possible without their efforts.

“I’m having to take things easier and have been overwhelmed by the support from well-wishers. I’m getting there but it will take time.”

The show is open to the public, and admission is £2.50 for adults and children get in for free. There is a £1 entry for show categories.

There will be an on-site catering facility and a cake and candy stall as well as face painting and a raffle.
