THE LATEST casualty of the downturn in High Street footfall was declared this week.
An established, locally-owned firm that stood for 12 years adjacent to Teviot Wines at the Sandbed end of the town’s main thoroughfare, It’s Great Outdoors failed to re-open its doors on Wednesday morning having traded earlier in the week.
Owner Brian Bouglas, from the town, closed an outlet in Galashiels earlier this year, and it is believed that the remaining shop in Peebles will close imminently. It is understood that Mr Bouglas attempted to prolong the existence of the shop on the High Street for the benefit of staff in the face of fierce competition from similar nearby businesses Yeoman’s Outdoors and Mountain Warehouse.
It has been reported that Yeoman’s, which in May went into administration before being transferred to a new parent company, will shed around 40 of its 70 stores.
The Hawick News has attempted to contact Yeoman’s press contact, operations director Roger Milner, during the last three months without success as the firm’s future – and its presence on Hawick High Street – remains in doubt.
Health food shop Julian Graves, a sister store of Holland and Barrett, closed last month after entering administration.
