Police have issued a warning about swimming outdoors after a young boy had to be rescued from the River Teviot.
The youngster narrowly escaped becoming the victim of "a very nasty incident" last Friday after local Fire and Rescue Service teams came to his aid and, with more people making the most of the recent good weather, police are warning parents not to leave children unsupervised around rivers, ponds or lochs.

Inspector John Scott said: "I would ask parents always to make sure they know where their children are, particularly when they are playing near to water.

"Children playing near water should always be supervised. It is very easy to get into difficulty in water, with many hidden dangers below the surface and strong undercurrents which can sweep people away.

"It is also important to be aware that, although the surface of a loch or pond may be warm, within a few feet it can become very cold and swimmers could easily be overcome by the cold. If in doubt, don't go in."
