HAWICK MSP John Lamont is concerned over the safety of Albert Bridge following recent high river levels. And the Tory parliamentarian has called for engineers to inspect the bridge in a bid to ensure it is still secure.
Having writen to Scottish Borders Council asking for a structural survey to be caried out on the bridge, Mr Lamont told the Hawick News: "After the tragic events in Cumbria last week, it is vital that bridges over affected rivers are checked to ensure that they are safe for vehicles and pedestrians. I know that hundreds of bridges in Cumbria are now being checked."
"The heavy rain in Hawick has raised concerns over the safety of older bridges. The Burns Club bridge over the River Teviot is an example. Furthermore, the new one-way system in the town means there has been an increased volume of traffic using the bridge."
The Albert Bridge was built in 1741 until the strain of flood waters led to the present bridge being erected in 1865.
Mr Lamont added: "It is vital that lives are not put at risk due to the damage caused by the recent flooding."
