SEVERAL streets in Hawick are in a "shocking state", according to SBC Councillor Davie Paterson.
Trevelyan Terrace, Drumlanrig Place, Gladstone Street and the Loan are among the streets attracting complaints from Mr Paterson's constituents.

Highlighting the situation this week, Councillor Paterson said: "I have had several residents telling m
e that some streets are an absolute disgrace and are not nearly as clean as they used to be.

"While I realise that one of the sweepers has been out of action for a number of weeks, surely this is now a bit of a feeble excuse.

"I know that they (Scottish Borders Council] have now hired a replacement sweeper but I've been told that, for some reason, it doesn't do the job as well as it should.

"Speaking personally, I have certainly noticed that Trevelyan Terrace, Drumlanrig Place, Gladstone Street and the Loan are all in a shocking state and work needs to be done to bring these streets up to a reasonable standard."

A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said: "One of our sweepers was out of action due to accidental damage, but we have now hired a replacement while it is being repaired.

"The team are now working hard to catch up, while the situation in Hawick has been assessed and is in hand."
