£7,500 bill for vandals’ handiwork

VANDALISM to an electricity source in the Common Haugh will cost the town £7,500 to repair.

It was heard at a meeting of Teviot and Liddesdale Area Committee this week that youngsters gathering in the car park at night is becoming a growing problem – and it is thought to have resulted in damage being caused to the electricity supply used during the shows.

Councillor George Turnbull said: “There has been an issue with youngsters congregating in the Haugh in the evenings, mostly in cars, which has been causing a problem for the cleansing staff the next day.

“But this damaged electricity supply is used by the Showmen’s Guild and needs to be repaired quickly before they arrive, which will take £7,500 from the Common Good Fund.”
