Rotarians hear plans for charity quiz

ROTARY CLUB: At last week’s meeting president Tommy Mulvee held a business meeting. Treasurer Bob Kellet reported that the club was solvent, and various convenors gave their reports and plans for the future.

Sandy Bannerman, of the international committee, outlined details of the quiz night to be held in the Catholic Halls on Friday evening, February 22, in aid of the ‘500 Miles Charity’ to provide prosthetic limbs for landmine victims in Zanzibar. Teams of four at £12 would be invited to come along for a fun night, with wine and nibbles provided.

Tickets are going well for the film night in March when ‘Les Miserables’ will be shown, assisted by wine, and tickets can be obtained at The Hub box office. Arrangements are by the foundation committee under Gus Neilson and this event would also support charity.

A donation was approved to a senior High School girl student who is going to Tanzania in the spring/summer to assist a medical team there, and she hopes to study midwifery as a career. She has to raise £2,000 to make the trip and is holding various fundraising events to do so.

The club is holding the usual literary high tea on the Sunday of the Reivers weekend in the rugby club when the speaker is Professor Douglas Gifford who will give a talk on ‘Walter Scott and the Border Ballads’ accompanied by local artistes in song and verse, so it should be a highlight of the festival.
