Jake stamps his impression on national philately competition with three gongs

A LOCAL stamp enthusiast enjoyed a rare “treble” at a national philately championships.

Jake Coltman (pictured) claimed the prestigious Carson Trophy and, for best presentation, the Dr Hirst Bowl before being presented with his first-ever gold medal for a mark of 87 per cent at The Association of Scottish Philatelic Societies 83rd Annual Congress Exhibition in Perth.

Mr Coltman, a member of the Hawick Stamp and Postcard Society, won the multiple awards for an exhibit entitled Treasury Essays: 1879-1880.

“It was a highly specialised exhibit,” he explained. “In 1879 there was to be a new issue of stamps and seven printers were invited to tender with examples of their prints, and my exhibit contained these examples.

“It’s difficult to source these things. I did it by contacting specialist dealers, on the phone, on price lists, and at stamp fairs.”

Mr Coltman has won the trophy and bowl awards before but has never won the gold medal for marks of 85 per cent or higher.

“I’ve won seven national trophies before, but the medal was the crowning glory, the icing on the cake.”

Mr Coltman will re-enter his exhibit, with some minor tweaks, at the British Congress at Perth in October.
