‘Incredible support’ ensures carnival success
Burnfoot Carnival
THE community-spirited folks of Burnfoot simply refused to let the threat of wet weather – and a temperamental generator – spoil their biggest day of the year as carnival fever swept through the housing estate on Saturday.
The annual event, which is organised by Burnfoot Community Council, has been voted a huge success and the locals who turned out in their droves enjoyed a fun-packed afternoon which, according to Provost Ron Smith, was the perfect tonic for the recent downpours.
In his opening speech, he said: “The carnival really is a super day and just what everyone needed as a distraction from the wet and gloomy weather, and it also helps draw the whole community together.”
And echoing Mr Smith’s comments, Burnfoot Community Council secretary Ian Middlemass, who led the organisation of the event, said: “The support from residents throughout the day really was incredible.”
Proceedings began in time-honoured fashion with the colourful fancy dress parade which snaked its way from Henderson Road to the carnival ground opposite the school, and at the head of the procession was the familiar two-wheeled presence of community policeman Steven Sutherland on his bike, closely followed by Carnival Queen Iona Menzies and Cornet Greg Lowrie, both of whom were dressed to the nines and travelled in style in the traditional vintage car. The impressive cavalcade also comprised Cornet Ross Nichol, Provost Smith, and Hawick Scout Fellowship Pipe Band whose muscial accompaniment hit all the right notes.
On their arrival at the carnival ground, the Queen and Cornet were greeted by scores of eager locals, and Iona and Greg looked as proud as punch as they were presented with the crown and riding crop from last year’s incumbents Lara Makin and Bryce Hume.
With the ceremonials having drawn to a successful conclusion, it was time for carnival-goers to let their hair down and many of the younger generation opted for the attractions of Slater’s Fun Fair which did a roaring trade, while a new addition to this year’s event saw several gazebos housing a wide range of new and established stalls.
