CAMERA CLUB: At last Thursday’s meeting, an intrepid group of members equipped with cameras and tripods ventured into the cold night air in order to photograph townscape scenes by street-lamplight as a practical exercise. The results will hopefully be displayed later in the season.

Thursday’s meeting will feature a talk by Oliver Eade on an event which could arise when one may need to say “Excuse me Sir, I just took your photograph.”

50+ GROUP WALKERS: Fourteen brave souls met in the Haugh with the thermometer reading barely above freezing for the short trip to Jedburgh to start Sunday’s walk.

The leader had decided that the route needed to be changed due to the vagaries of the weather, and the group left Jedburgh heading sough along the A68 in four inches of snow to the junction for Hundalee, where they took a right up the hill. Passing Braeheads, the followed the road/track to join the Abbey Way where they found themselves making their way over fresh snow. It was a good job the walkers had a fence line to follow, otherwise they could have got lost!

Along ‘The Way’, they slithered up Dunion Hill, and after a brief stop to take in the wintry views, they headed along the invisible track to continue their journey along the Jedburgh Trail, which as become quite overgrown along the duck boards). The group then elected to cut across the golf course, avoing the greens, to seek shelter for a quick lunch.

Onwards, they went through Williescrook Plantation, noting that a large number of trees had been felled. Following the Justice Trail, they then crossed the A68 and retured to the start via the old railway route and up the waterside.

Next up on February 3 is a moderate walk in the Ewes area.

FILM AND VIDEO GROUP: By way of a change to the syllabus, Ann Singleton presented part two of her memorial cruise DVD, which covered a respectful service on deck of the MV Balmoral to those who perished on the Titanic’s maiden voyage 100 years ago. The film continued with a sight-seeing tour of New York before Ann’s return to Scotland by air.

In addition to this item, Tony Gulvin showed his five-minute film on the ruined building of old Cavers house, which appeared dramatic in the gloomy light of a winter’s day and with appropriate orchestral music accompaniment.

Tuesday’s meeting will take the form of a Scottish night, followed by a Burns supper of haggis and neeps etc.

ROTARY CLUB: Last Thursday’s Burns supper celebrations saw president Tommy Mulvee welcome the company, after which Tom Elliot-Walker piped the haggis in in fine style. The address was given with great aplomb by Gus Neilson, while Jock Thorburn did the Selkirk Grace. After a traditional meal, the evening was handed over to MC Bobby Cairns, and took the form of a musical appreciation to the Bard, with singers Joyce Tinlin, Pat Sutherland and Michael Aitken all hitting the high notes with some superb performances of traditional songs. Tom gave recitals on his fiddle, and Rosalyn Walker provided the piano accompaniment. Michael also gave a superbly animated rendition of Tam o’ Shanter, which was followed by Sandy Bannerman’s vote of thanks, and the company singing Auld Lang Syne.
