Once seen, never forgotten – The New Rope String Band

The New Rope String Band

The New Rope String Band

ONE of the most entertaining live acts on the UK circuit, The New Rope String Band, make a whistle-stop visit to Scotland next month after touring Ireland . . . and this time they include Hawick in the tour schedule.

The band has been wowing the crowds at big outdoor events, theatres and arts centres across the land, creating more mirth than is natural and leaving many aching sides and cheekbones in their wake . . . and that includes all age groups.

Reviewers frequently concentrate on the more eccentric happenings, often forgetting to remind everyone that the musicianship on display is pretty amazing, too.

It’s a classic case of once seen, never forgotten and often folks had asked why they’d never played Edinburgh Festival Fringe before. Well at last that was put right in 2012. And, as many predicted would happen, they carried off the highest accolade possible, winning a Herald Angel for their outstanding contribution following a triumphant seven-night run at The Famous Spiegeltent.

The band kicked off 2013 in fine form, playing to a capacity crowd at Glasgow’s Tron Theatre during Celtic Connections, before heading for dates in Finland, France and The Netherlands. Their Glasgow show was the first on the Celtic Connections programme to become a sold-out event.

Combining superb musicianship with side-splitting comic genius, The New Rope String Band are truly unique entertainers. Elements of circus clowning, vaudeville slapstick and sheer inspired silliness are spliced with superb acoustic music as these maniac minstrels deliver everything from Python-esque absurdism to pyrotechnics and live interactive film. Audiences are advised to expect the hilariously unexpected.

Americana music legend Tim O’Brien is a huge fan and says: “They made me laugh until I cried.”

After they appeared in the Northern Isles last year, The Shetland Times said: “It’s impossible not to love them.” While the organisers of Orkney Folk Festival said they were “incredible”.

Reviewing a performance in London, Maverick magazine had this to say: “The show is stuffed full of sheer whoopee, inventiveness and endless crowd-pleasing moments – not to be missed!”

The New Rope String Band play Heart of Hawick on Saturday, March 16. Tickets on sale from venue now.
