Guthrie memorial run set to attract 120 vintage vehicles to Denholm

AROUND 120 vintage cars and motorcycles, some more than 100 years old, will descend on Denholm from all over Britain this weekend for the Jimmie Guthrie Memorial Run.

A century-old Model T Ford belonging to Mike Povey in Ancrum will be the oldest car on the circuit, while Ayton’s Alex Martin will exhibit a 1903 Ormond motorbike.

The 51st ‘Guthrie Run’ is sponsored by Bonhams auctioneers and will welcome entrants from as far afield as Aberdeenshire and Kent. And race organiser Jimmy Steele is excited about Sunday’s event.

“We should have more than 120 cars and motorcycles on the run, and the preparation is all going fine,” he said. “We are very grateful to Bonhams who are supporting us financially.”

A car boot sale at Denholm green will be held from 9am, and a convoy of vehicles will leave the village at 1pm. Along the way, motorists will call in at Harestanes Visitor Centre (1.30pm) and Wilton Lodge Park (3-4pm) before returning to Denholm for a prizegiving ceremony at around 4.30pm. Inclement weather may result in shorter stops.

The event is held in honour of the Hawick motorcyclist who became three-times champion at the European Grand Prix before his death at Sachsenring in 1937.

Last year’s Jimmie Guthrie Cup was won by John Fraser of Hawick with a Brough Superior motorcycle. The Feuars and Householders Shield for best car was won by Stewart Skilbeck from Yorkshire with a 1927 Austin 7.
