ROTARY CLUB
LAST week's guest speaker Professor Ronald Speirs gave an interesting and humorous account of his medical experiences at home and abroad in his former roles as professor of physiology at London Hospital Medical College, senior tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons and examiner for the Royal Colleges of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London.
Now retired and much in demand as a public speaker, Ronald is still very active as chairman of the Lawrence Home Nursing group, an organisation which provides medical support for people while enabling them to remain at home instead of being in hospital. Ronald, also an accomplished artist, is a past-president of Chipping Norton Rotary and Probus Clubs.
Ronald's pawky and down-to-earth personality went down well with club members, and past-president Andrew Suddon proposed a vote of thanks.
Also during last week's meeting, new member Sydney Huddart, of Denholm, was introduced to the club by Tommy Mulvee.
The golf and bowls competitions will take place shortly, while golfers interested in playing in the Bob Smith tournament at Lilliardsedge should contact sports officer Ron Laidlaw.
The speaker at this Thursday's meeting will be Olympic and Commonwealth Boxer Douglas Young, who will talk on his experiences in Los Angeles in 1984.
Rotarian Billy McWatters will be guest speaker at next week's meeting of Duns Rotary Club.
Anyone interested in joining Rotary should visit the club's website at www.hawickrotary.com, email rhsa@ellistrin.com or telephone Gus Neilson on 378768.
