60 YEARS AGO

HAIRDRESSERS' DANCE: About 100 couples attended the Border branch of the National Hairdressers' Federation dinner and dance in the Crown Hotel on Friday. Many members of the Federation from other Border towns attended, and a pleasant time was spent dancing to the music of the Arcadians band from Selkirk. Mr George Anderson and Miss Mary Morrison, both of Hawick, won the elimination waltz.

40 YEARS AGO

STABLING PROBLEM: Mounted supporters of the Cornet will have to find their own stabling this year as the Town Council Development Committee have been unable to locate suitable property and it would not be a financial proposition to erect temporary stables in such a short time for the 1970 Festival. It is hoped that a solution will be found in time for next year's Common-Riding.

20 YEARS AGO

NURSING HOME REFUSED: Region planners have again refused an application by Mr Minex Karia to convert Wood Norton mansion house to a nursing home.

Officials say road access would still be unsuitable even if improvements proposed by the applicant were made.
