60 YEARS AGO

PESCO PENSION: The hosiery firm of Messrs Peter Scott and Co Ltd are introducing a pension and insurance scheme for their workers. It is on a contribution basis and the greatest part of the cost of the benefits will be borne by the co
mpany.

BURNFOOT HOUSES: This weekend sees the 100th house occupied at Burnfoot. The 100 include 37 of the first section, 25 of the Whitson-Fairhurst houses, and 38 of the Scottish Housing Association Houses.

SNOWDROPS AT DRYBURGH: Only eight travelled by SMT bus on Sunday to view the snowdrops at Dryburgh Abbey.

40 YEARS AGO

EARLY CLOSING: The local Chamber of Trade are to consider a proposal at their annual general meeting in March that early closing day for shops be Monday and not Tuesday as at present.
DOG SHOW: Hawick and District Canine Society's annual confined show for members, held in the town hall on Saturday, attracted a record 384 entries and was well supported by visitors and the "gate" also broke all records.

WORKERS' PROTEST: The 180 employees of the tweed firm of Blenkhorn & Richardson, Eastfield Mills, staged a lightning work stoppage on Wednesday morning following a dispute over holidays. After a deputation had seen the management, the employees agreed to resume work when they were given assurances that their complaint would be investigated. The stoppage lasted about an hour.

20 YEARS AGO

GALE DAMAGE: Wind and torrential rain has battered Hawick with six large trees brought down at Wilton Lodge Park, several cars damaged by debris, and the large trunk road sign adjacent to Trinity Gardens blown down and roofs lifted off garages at Hassendean Court.

SURPLUS FRAMEWORKERS: Pringle have declared 10 frameworkers surplus to requirements but they have been offered alternative jobs in knitting and other production departments.
