60 YEARS AGO

WELCOME FOR SCOTTISH COVENANT: Doubts as to the reception Hawick would accord the Scottish Covenant were dispelled at the largely attended meeting in the town hall when Mr John MacCormick stated the facts of the Hawick case for a Scot
tish Parliament. The audience followed every sentence with the keenest interest, and from the applause at the end of the speech it was obvious that the great majority of the company were enthusiastic Scottish Covenanters.

NEW BUS GARAGE: A Dean of Guild Court has granted a petition by Robert John Nichol, bus proprietor, 4 Oliver Place, to erect buildings in Noble Place to be used as a bus garage. The site of the garage is on the small haugh in Noble Place.

40 YEARS AGO

SUCCESSFUL STUDENT: Mr Charles Oliver, 2 Ruberslaw Road, has graduated B.Sc. in medicine at Edinburgh University.

YOUTH CENTRE OPENS: Hawick can proudly claim another "first" in the Borders with the opening of the town's £46,000 youth centre by the Duchess of Roxburghe, who referred to it as "an extremely good venture" with several aspects which greatly appealed to her.

LOCAL FIRM TO BUILD 208 HOUSES: James Swinton & Co., Noble Place, have won a £398,749 contract to build 109 houses at the Mayfield scheme, bringing their total in hand to 208.
They are already engaged on the building of 63 houses at Haggisha' and 36 at Allars Crescent.

20 YEARS AGO

FIRST SNOW: The town experienced its first heavy snow of the winter on Saturday, resulting in the cancellation of many rugby and soccer fixtures, although the Melrose v Hawick match went ahead at The Greenyards.

Several roads were blocked for up to two hours during the afternoon including the A7 between Hawick-Selkirk and Stow-Falahill, and the A68 at Carter Bar.

SPENDING SPREE: Many local traders have reported a healthy pre-Christmas spending spree with tills really starting to ring at the weekend when Saturday's snowstorm prompted shoppers to stay locally and buy in Hawick.
