60 YEARS AGO

HOSIERY EXPORTS: Official intimation from the Board of Trade Hosiery Control states that exports of hosiery and knitwear from members of the Hawick Hosiery Manufacturers' Association for the four months to October 29, 1949, totalled £
714,783. This represents an increase of 67 per cent on the figure for the corresponding period of last year. In the 12 months to October 29, the value of goods exported by members of the Association was £1,669,118.

40 YEARS AGO

PRIZE-WINNER: On a Border TV quiz programme on Monday night, Mr and Mrs D. Stewart, 5 Wellogate Place, won £20.

NO BINGO: Langholm Town Council have turned down an application by Mr O. Taddei, Hawick, to run thrice-weekly bingo sessions in the Buccleuch Hall as they felt that this would be unfair to those making regular local bookings.

20 YEARS AGO

CROWN HOTEL BID: It is understood that a consortium of local businessmen have made an offer to purchase the disused Crown Hotel from the owner, Mr R. Bowie.

Details have been kept confidential but it is believed the proposals include provision of a lounge bar and some retail and private residential accommodation.
