CRICKET CLUB CENTENARY: Hawick and Wilton Cricket Club should celebrate its centenary this season. Any doubts which may have assailed officials of the club as to the exact date are understood to have been cleared up. Where confusion may have arisen is the fact that it was not until 1860 that the club became tenants of Buccleuch Park.
Fifty years earlier in 1910, a jubilee book was published entitled "Fifty Years' Cricket in Hawick." In the "History of Hawick from 1832", it is stated that the Hawick and Wilton Club was formed in 1849.
Cricket was introduced into Hawick about the year 1844 by a number of Englishmen from hosiery manufacturing districts.

Rob Paterson, Dave's older brother, soon got the measure of J. Cameron, of the Glasgow club, and was declared the winner after three hard-hitting rounds.

DEATH OF CENTENARIAN: The town has lost a real character and true "guitterbluid" with the death on Friday of 100-year-old Miss Mary Hogg, a resident of Drumlanrig Hospital.
Born in Loan on November 18, 1888, she was a Common-Riding enthusiast with a great love for Hawick. After her schooling at Drumlanrig, she began work at Wilson and Glenny where she learned the skilled job of darning.
In her youth she was fond of dancing, which was held in several local venues, notably the town hall and in part of the Exchange Buildings later known as The Palais.
VIP VISITOR: A VIP visitor to Humphreys on Friday night was Haluk Billinger, better known as Mehmet from Eastenders. Though the turnout was disappointing, those that made the effort thoroughly enjoyed his outgoing personality and charm. Haluk went on stage at 11.45pm and stayed for 15 minutes, answering questions on the Eastenders programme and spent an hour posing for photographs.
Commenting on the turnout, Marina Centre manager Bernie Woods said: "The public have a right to choose who they want and don't want to see. I am only trying to bring a cross-section of entertainment to Hawick."
