Burnfoot school was recently presented with its first Green Flag Award by the Eco Schools organisation, whose senior officer Kirsten Leesk praised the strong ethos pupils and staff showed in their eco-work and the confident and articulate manner in which the children described their involvement.

Ms Leesk also said that the school garden was a wonderful resource in which the pupils had displayed a lot of creativity, while also noting the school's excellent links with the local community which were invaluable to the development of Burnfoot's eco-work. Burnfoot is the first school in Hawick to fly the Green Flag and will be reasssessed in 2010 for its second flag. Photograph: Alistair Learmonth
