HAWICK Scout Fellowship Pipe Band Major Michael Bruce was awarded the honour of the Provost Council's Achievement Award.
The annual accolade was presented to Mr Bruce for his contribution to the the band during a special reception in the council chambers last Wednesday night.

But the modest local car dealer says he also wants to accept the award on behalf of fellow
band member Charlie Turnbull, and the late Stuart Lammie.

Mr Bruce, who attended the reception with his wife Alison, told the Hawick News: "It was a huge surprise as I had gone along to the town hall with the band expecting to accept a cheque for our funds, so I was shocked to learn that I was receiving the Provost's Council's award.

"This award is certainly a nice thing to have, but I have to say that it also has to be in recognition of the work of Charlie Turnbull who was standing next to me, who was the pipe band major for 35 years, and Stuart Lammie until he died, who both have done so much. It is not just my work that makes the pipe band a success."

Mr Bruce had been nominated for the award by the members of the Provost's Council.

Provost Zandra Elliot commented: "Michael is a very modest man but he has given this award in recognition of his contribution to our society and community."
