I read with interest the story about the flooding in last week's Hawick News.
I refer to the part of the article which described how a driver ignored the road-closed sign, and drove up the road behind the park towards Martin's Bridge, got stuck in flood water and the police had to rescue him. What a stupid, ignorant and selfis
h man, putting himself and police in a very dangerous situation. The police and/or the local council do not close roads without good reason.
One afternoon last week, while walking from the High Street towards the Horse monument, I could hardly believe what I'd just seen. Bourtree Place was closed to traffic from Findlay's Restaurant to the Mart Street roundabout. There was quite clearly a road closure notice and barriers across the road.
However, a lady driver turned left from Oliver Place, and no, the barriers were not going to stop her!
She drove right on to the pavement, squeezing her car between Findlay's and the barriers, and headed off along Bourtree Place. This was a stupid, ignorant and selfish lady.
Again, the police had Bourtree Place closed for what must have been a good reason. I don't know what the problem was, but there were safety railings in front of the church.
Should something have happened to this lady or her car, she would have had nobody to blame but herself. Trouble is, nowadays, nobody wants to take any responsibility which is very sad.
I ask myself, why do people break rules and ignore important notices? I cannot answer that question. They will take no responsibility and get themselves into trouble and expect others (the police in this first case) to help them.
