I have often been told one should not look a gift horse in the mouth or gift bull as the case may be but the article in last week's Hawick News appealing for funds to complete the Turnbull statue, to be erected at the Heritage Hub, raises some interesting questions.
Originally quoted as a £100,000 gift from the wealthy American Turnbull Clan, the brain child of the aptly named Wally Turnbull, the co-ordinators of the Heart of Hawick scheme agreed to fund the construction of the plinth and now begging bowls are to be placed in Hawick shops and organisations to try to collect a further £20,000 to complete this folly which will occupy this prime site.

The question arises, who agreed to accept this doubtful gift and will other famous Border families be allowed to erect a statue or memorabilia in this attractive area?

I would suggest to Teries to think about other more deserving causes before filling the Turnbull Clan collection boxes.
