Dear riders/supporters, much preparation has gone into securing the Cornet's ride-outs again this year.
And, as always, we are indebted and extremely grateful to the farmers and landowners for their support and for their permission for us to cross their land year after year.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind riders and supporters of a
few important matters. On ride-out days, marshals shall be in charge. All will follow the directions of the senior marshal (Right-Hand Man). Foot marshals will be suitably positioned (as required) at gates and crossings, and again all due respect should be given to their requirements.
The ride-out routes are pre-arranged between the Principals, farmers and the police. Therefore all riders are required to adhere to the agreed route back to Towerdykeside. If, for any reason, a rider has to leave the ride early a marshal must be notified.
To maintain our previous high standards, only smart suitable riding wear will be accepted. It should be noted that protective headgear must be worn by all riders, with appropriate dark, self-coloured silks (no multi-coloured silks). Please note this dress code applies for all riders whether completing the whole ride from start to finish or joining the ride-out at any stage and for any distance.
All litter should be taken home or deposited in bins or bags that may be provided. No food should be left where animals might pick up and eat. All riders should be aware that it is essential that we maintain our present high standard of time keeping, for the police who control and manage the time we spend on public roads, and not least the public who enthusiastically wait on their Cornet's arrival (again marshals will control).
To meet the requirements of the farmers it is essential that walkers follow the exact same route as the riders (in some instances farmers move stock to let us through). Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. In an effort to retain some element of respect (especially at Backdamgate mustering point) it should be noted that riders must not mount the pavement for any reason whatsoever. Any rider using foul or abusive language or creating a public nuisance will be severely dealt with and may be asked to leave the ride-out. It should be noted by all concerned that young inexperienced riders should always be accompanied by a responsible and capable adult, who should make themselves known to the marshals in charge. Furthermore, all young riders should carry a written note with a contact telephone number for their parents/guardians on their person. No riders shall be permitted to participate in any part of a Rideout should they require assistance/guidance by lead rein.
After all ride-outs, horses requiring to go to the Common Haugh, Wilton area etc, shall NOT be permitted to disperse down Silver Street. They should proceed over Slitrig Bridge and down the Howegate under police supervision.
With your help we look forward to another successful ride-out season.
