ORGANISERS are keeping their fingers and toes crossed that the sun will shine on this year's Vertish Hill Sports.

And after heavy rain drowned out proceedings for the last two years running, the 128thth staging of the annual event tomorrow is definitely due
some dry weather.

Sports secretary Frank Scott told the Hawick News: "After two years of wet weather we're hoping for good conditions, that's the number one priority and that's what everyone on the committee would certainly like.

"We haven't even managed to finish the Sports for the last couple of years, so hopefully the weather will be kind to us."

Regardless of the conditions, the day is one of the highlights of the sporting calendar as primary school children flock to the golf course to compete in a whole number of events, including running, sack race, the egg and spoon race, hurdles and skipping.

And more than 900 youngsters are expected to take part.

This year also sees the 40th anniversary of David Armstrong, Brian Gibb, Ian Scott and Ian Armstrong's triumph for Burnfoot Primary in the boys relay event.

Mr Gibb said: "To celebrate this milestone, the four of us, who all still live in Hawick, thought it would be a nice gesture to donate gift vouchers to this year's winning relay teams, both boys and girls."

The boys will also be competing for the Alec Johnstone Trophy and the girls for the Elizabeth Johnstone Trophy.

The family day of fun kicks at 12.30pm at the Evergreen Hall with a procession led by the Saxhorn Band and Hawick Scouts Band, leaving the Horse at 1pm prompt.

All children taking part in the procession will receive a voucher and can claim £2 on their arrival at the Vertish Hill.

The school with the highest number of points overall will be presented with the prestigious Vertish Hill Sports Cup.

Entry to each event costs 10p and although entries for primary school children have closed, under-fives can register on the day.

Tea will be served at 4.15pm.
