The previous evening, the following members gained prizes in the NFU competition: Rob Gray, two firsts; Ali Graham, a second; Robin Chapman and Ian Bell each received a third place.
The meeting on November 27 will be a practical demonstration by Gordon Gilfether on making audio-visual sequences.
50+ WALKING GROUP
The group had a longer drive than usual to the start of the walk at Carcant, near Heriot.
The walkers enjoyed the sunny weather, which made for wonderful views at the Midlothian boundary fence, which was reached after a pleasant walk up the lovely valley of the Carcant Burn.
Though the hills of Wull Muir and Ruther Law only reach around 1,400ft, the walkers were treated to the spectacle of the Forth Valley out to the North Sea in an easterly direction, with the bigger Moorfoot Hills rising from Gladhouse Reservoir looking west.
Eventually, the old right of way was reached where a picnic spot was found among a shelter belt of trees. Tramping on through the glaur, the lonely cottage at Heriot Cleuch was reached. More rough ground then had to be covered alongside White Cleuch until the now-familiar Carcant Burn was reached. Some old sheep pens seemed the ideal stop for a final refreshment, with the sun slipping over the eastern horizon and a chill in the air.
The 20 walkers were soon back at the cars for the return leg to Hawick.
LITTLE THEATRE FILM CLUB
MIND-BENDING political action-thriller Vantage Point – starring Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker and Sigourney Weaver – is showing on Sunday.
During a historic counter-terrorism summit in Spain, the US President is struck down by an assassin's bullet. Eight strangers have a perfect view of the kill, but what did they see?
As the minutes leading up to the fatal shot are replayed through the eyes of each witness, the reality of the assassination takes shape.
But just when you think you know the answer, the shattering final truth is revealed.
All evening performances have been cancelled, with a matinee at 2pm only. Members are admitted free, non-members £4 at the door.
PROBUS CLUB
FORTY-four members attended the last meeting to hear an enthralling talk by John Cleland on his touring car experiences.
John, who is managing director of Volvo/Jaguar dealers Clelands of Galashiels, began his resume with his early days in hill climbs, local rallies and circuit racing, before being selected by Vauxhall as a works driver. He won the British Touring Car Championship in 1989 in an Astra.
His talk was punctuated with numerous interesting anecdotes, and he also stressed that winning in this medium is imperative in order to sell cars.
Rae Chlopas gave the vote of thanks.
ROTARY CLUB
President Keith Bird was in the chair at last week's meeting in the Buccleuch Hotel, where Liz Wood reported on an enjoyable visit several members had made to the Jedburgh Rotary Club. It is hoped that other Borders clubs will be visited in the coming weeks.
The club's Bob Smith Golf Trophy – played over the Lilliardsedge course – was won by sports officer Ron Laidlaw; 2, George Rennie; 3, Bob Kellett. The knockout golf competition was contested at Minto between George Rennie and David Oliver, with the latter emerging winner.
Club members will be staffing a stand at Morrisons this week in aid of funds for the community hospital and other Rotary charities.
On a recent visit to Thailand, Laos and Burma, Rotarian Billy McWatters visited Bangkok and Chang Puek Rotary clubs, and presented their respective presidents with Hawick club banners.
The guest speaker on December 11 will be Sir Chay Blyth, whose subject will be 'Escapades on the high seas'.
