THE club council met prior to the main meeting in the Buccleuch Hotel on Thursday where it was agreed that the club will join its counterparts across the region in raising of funds for two Kidney Dialysis Units at The Borders General Hospital.
NHS
Borders has guaranteed finance for the staffing of the units, although the BGH has machines in operation they are all fully committed which results in patients having to travel to Edinburgh several times a week for their dialysis. The additional machines will help to relieve that situation, and Rotarians are hoping that members of the public will rally round in giving generously to this worthwhile cause. The proceeds of several fund raising events held by the Hawick club during the course of the next year will be designated to the appeal.
President Keith Bird welcomed Mrs Angela Dewar as guest speaker to the club meeting. As President elect of the newly formed Rotary Club of Melrose, it was heard that the club is growing stronger, and Angela gave Hawick Rotarians an insight into how it began. Initially contacts were made through the Melrose Chamber of Trade, and it was obvious that Angela possessed lots of enthusiasm and persistence using both in a balanced form to interest prospective members. Angela ably answered questions put to her from club members and a vote of thanks was given by Billy McWatters.
The club was well represented at a talk on the Hawick 'talking newspaper' arranged by Past President Robin Mason in Teviot Church hall last Friday morning – Jack Swanston, Ron Laidlaw, Sandy Bannerman, and Billy McWatters attended as well as several wives of Rotarians.
Tom Ingoldsby of Galashiels Rotary Club gave a practical insight into how everything worked. Dr Peter Paterson-Brown, who has been involved for some time in the talking newspaper, passed on his experiences to those present.
This Friday Alistair Davies of Langholm Rotary Club is installed as the new District Governor, and a dinner is being held on that night to commemorate the event which will be attended be several Hawick Rotarians and the Hawick Club is to receive a Presidential Citation.
Editor of the club magazine Iain Smith invites contributions for the next issue of the club magazine.
The recent Rotary Coffee Morning held in Trinity Church Hall raised the sum of £528 for Foundation which is Rotary's own charity
The monies are used for a wide range of worthwhile causes at home and abroad.
