THE Hawick Welcome Initiative is once again joining forces with the Archaeological Society to host the popular weekly guided walks entitled 'Where Slitrig Dances'.
Townsfolk and visitors alike can take a dander through the past, present and future of the Heart of Hawick area. From the site of the town's infamous Auld Mid Raw in Drumlanrig Square, to St Mary's Church where the original Hawick settlement had its
beginnings and the transformed Tower Mill – the walks are a must for anyone interested in the town's past.

Tony Wilson, Welcome Hosts coordinator, told the Hawick News: "It was so popular last year that we have decided to offer it for another year, and we are delighted that local historian Gordon Macdonald will once again be the guide."

And this year the walk has the added bonus of finishing within the walls of St Mary's Parish Church, which has stood guardian of and attended to the spiritual needs of the town for centuries.

Walk host Gordon Macdonald added: "Our aim in these walks is also to highlight the diversity of our town's history, and to remind visitors and locals alike of those long-forgotten callants.

"Many will be surprised, for a small town like Hawick, how many of its sons and daughters have left their native hills and made a real impact on the society of their day."

The walks, which take place every Thursday at 2pm from July 24 until August 28, in hail, rain or shine – cost £2 and those interested should meet at the Heritage Hub.
