IT'S December, the month for buying Christmas presents for relatives and friends. But with it comes problems – what to give.
If the person you're going to give a present is a gardener, then the choice is wide and varied and all dependent on budget.

One choice could be tools, ranging from a hand trowel, hand fork, secateurs or even a rake, hoe, spade or fork.

Tools can be bought relatively cheaply but to get the best, buy the best. All types of tools come in stainless steel and though higher priced, if properly looked after, will last a lifetime.

One of the most popular gifts to give at Christmas is a pot plant and here there is a huge choice.

If it is a woman you are buying for then what better than a bowl of hyacinths. These are available just beginning to colour and by bringing them into the warmth of a room, their beauty and fragrance can be enjoyed.

The other favourite is a poinsettia. Their red tops (bracts to give them their proper name) bring boldness to a room or indoor festive display.
