Provost tells Callants of town vandal concerns

1973: VANDALISM is assuming colossal proportions in Hawick. It is an impeding influence on the work of the Council and a heavy item on the pockets of ratepayers. This was stated by Provost D. Atkinson at the Callants Club dinner in the Tower Hotel on Friday.

MR G. BEE, burgh surveyor, is to submit a report at the next meeting of the Town Council Development Committee, on the question of a footbridge over the River Teviot in the vicinity of Albert Park.

1983: TWO new ventures are planned for Hawick. It is understood that a wine bar will open at 8 High Street, formerly Motogear Accessories, managed by Andrew Irvine, 3 Wilton Hill; and that a religious bookshop with cafe above, will open in O’Connell Street in the former premises of Miller, plumbers.

1993: A furious row has flared this week over proposals which would mean closure of the town’s 101-year-old main Post Office in Bridge Street.

The plan involves the transfer of all counter services to a proposed new office in the foyer of the £13-million Safeway Superstore, presently under consruction at the former Auction Mart site and due to open in June.

2003: A POLICE raid on Hawick’s Saturday market netted £10,000 of illegal CDs, DVDs and videos. Cops bagged the illegal goods during a joint operation with trading standards and music industry officials at the weekend. One local man and two men from Edinburgh have been charged with possession of counterfeit goods.MORE NOSTALGIA IN FRIDAY’S PAPER
