NO MINIUMUM age limit is enforced at the Saturday night Town Hall dances, according to Mr Adie Barker, entertainments officer. He told Councillor G. McGowan at the General Services Committee meeting on Tuesday night that the average age of patrons had gone down drastically in the last few years. Now 85 per cent were under 17 years with the youngest being around 14. He would not like a minimum age limit introduced as the youngsters of the town had nowhere else to go on a Saturday night.

When questioned about trouble and drunkeness at the dances, he said he thought the position was better now than it ever had been.

AFTER being closed for well over a year, news that the Ewe & Lamb public house in Orrock Place is to reopen, was welcomed at an adjourned meeting of the District Licensing Board in the Council Chambers on Monday.

A temporary transfer of licence to the partnership of T. S. and E. Davies, and Mrs Eileen Davies, Harwood-on-Teviot, was confirmed subject to work required to bring the premises up to standard after lying empty for so long.

The court was told by solicitor Sandy Stevenson that “a thoroughly experienced” couple would be in charge under ongoing supervision.

THE future of Hawick’s Henderson Building still hangs in the balance despite a £400,000 cash boost being given to Borders College.

The extra funding is part of a national financial package which is mooted as being “vital” to ensure their security – however, the fate of the town’s campus remains grim as the controversial plans to close it down remain.
